Find a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life
Whether you are just entering the corporate world or switching jobs, it’s time you took a close look at your closet. Dressing up for college and work, might be drastically contrasting. While college would have let you play with colours and experiment new looks and styles, office atmosphere demands discipline and conduct.
A little more effort along with the right guidance can help you get that professional look with no hassles. The styles, colors, lengths and fit of your fashion choices will speak volumes about your ability to do your job. If you are concerned about your career, you’ll be more concerned about looking professional than looking cute or trendy.
Yahoo! Campus explored the different dressing styles among men and women and also got designers to advice on the same. Here’s all that your wardrobe should not miss out!
Firstly, separate the usable clothes from the unusable. This will eliminate the older ones, giving more room for new stuff. Give up on torn, worn out denims, dashy colours and skimpy tees. These are bound to catch unwanted attention at work, letting people comment or mock.
For women, to get that perfect formal look, a pair of smart looking, well-fitting linen trousers is a huge hit. Colour plays an important role in women’s clothing. Traditional colours like beige, white, black and pastel shades are welcomed in pants. These can look chic and professional when teamed with the right top. A checked or striped shirt, full or three fourth sleeved can be the best bet. You could also wrap around a scarf to complete the look.
Knee length skirts are also feminine and wearable to work. However, there are a few limitations one must bear in mind before venturing out. Never pick up skin hugging skirts. Save them for parties. Straight skirts, like pencil skirts should be loose enough to sit comfortably. Jackets should be well fitting, with no gaps between the buttonholes. “For the casual look, pyjamas with kurtas or salwars, or neatly pressed cotton saris are also impressive”, says ace designer Anu Nagappa. Pinks and other flashy colours are acceptable, but do not over do them. Team it with good footwear and accessories. Keep the accessories low. This is not the time to show off your pearls and stones. This can mess your professional look. Chunky earrings and neck pieces will do no good to your attire. Instead opt for small studs and simple bracelets or a smart watch.
Bags can enhance the way you look. Opt for browns and blacks, with more room, as a clumsy bag can let things pop out. “There are many brands in the market which have specific bags that can be carried to work. Pick one of those and make your own style statement. Handmade, jute or mirror-worked bags are a strict no to work place”, informs Anu.
A well done hair is most important as it can make or break your over-all look. Tie it up neatly or if you are letting it down, make sure to set it well. Use a proper drier and a style it with mousse or gel, so that it stays in place and does not demand frequent combing.
Having done that, play low on face make-up. Use a good liner to highlight eyes and a light gloss for the lips. Manicured nails, painted with sober shades will be appreciated.
With clothes and make up in place, don’t miss out on the footwear. Have a good combination of stilettos, flats, formal shoes and sandals. Pick up sober colours so that your footwear does not overshadow your clothes.
For men, formals would mostly be blacks, blues and greys. However black pants are most preferred. Well stitched pants with clean striped shirts will do the needful. Slacks could also be an option. A smart tie, in contrast to the shirt or pant will complete the look. “Talking about accessories for men, black or brown leather shoes and a smart brief case are the best, adds Anu Nagappa.
Lastly, do not forget to carry yourself well. Walk brisk, smile and be confident. Follow these and you are all set to rock the corporate world.
Must haves for women in the wardrobe: Cotton saris and salwars, a pair of trousers, well-fitted shirts and footwear that complements the dress.
Must haves for men: Well tailored pants, shirts in blues and greys with ties, a smart briefcase and leather shoes in black or brown.
